Chat Noir Le Chat Noir was a famous 19th century cabaret in the notoriously bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. It was opened 18 November, 1881 at 84 Boulevard Rouchechouart by the artist Rodolph-Alexandre Salis, and closed in 1897 (much to the disappointment of Picasso and others). It was here that the Salon des Arts Incoh'rents (Salon of Incoherent Arts), and the "shadow plays" got their start. The alluring and iconic poster was composed by Salis in 1896. |
